Hewlett Packard HP DV6000 – Noisy Fan Repaired

No Gravatar

My first blog on repairing a laptop is on a HP DV6000 laptop. The owner called and said the laptop has a noisy fan and asked if I could fix it. Of course I can fix it as long as I can get the parts. Cost of repair was agreed at £80 and I collected the laptop within the hour.

Once I got it back to the workshop (Home) I had to strip it down to the motherboard. Alot of laptops have a large cover to take off the back which reveals the heatsink and fan HSF but not with the the HP DV6000.

It doesn’t take long to open the laptop and with the newer HP laptops like this HP use minimal screws to hold it all together although there are nuts to undo on this model before the palmrest can come off.

Well on with the photos, I took these photos during the the rebuilding of the laptop but I guess you can start in reverse to undo one.

    Nice guide, thanks. Just one question. If I want just to clean the fan I have to totally disassemble the laptop as you did ? i have dv6000 and it gets overheated often and suts down (fan is working though).

    @Taras
    Hello Taras, yes you will. The motherboard needs to be completely removed before you can remove the HSF (Heat Sink and Fan). When you rebuild the laptop put some thermal compound on the CPU then attach the HSF.

    My fan is noisy also so I plan on taking my DV6449US apart. However, I do not think I need a whole new HSF, I just want the fan. How did you know what fan to get? HP only sells the whole assembly………thanks and good guide.

    I ordered a new HSF and then took the fan out. Try http://www.chilternitparts.com Just type the part number of the HSF which ends in .001

    I tried to follow your direction to replace the fan. I’m stuck on how to remove the palmrest — it seems that there are some attachment to the body near the touchpad. I don’t see any screws I’m missing to remove (when I look from the other side). Am I missing something?
